Pomade, Clay, Wax, or Paste: Which Hair Product Should You Actually Be Using?

By Zak Galindo  ·  March 12, 2026

The Hair Product Aisle Is Genuinely Overwhelming

Walk into any drugstore and look at the men's hair product section. Pomades, clays, waxes, gels, pastes, creams, mousses. Most of them have vague descriptions and stock photos of guys with hair that looks nothing like yours. Zero guidance on who any of it is actually for.

Most guys either grab the same thing they've been using since high school or pick whatever looks good on the packaging. Neither approach works that well. Here's a straightforward breakdown of what the main products actually do.

Galindo's own UK-formulated product line — paraben-free, sulfate-free, available at both locations.

The Main Products and What They're For

Pomade: High Shine, Slick and Polished

Pomade gives you a shiny, polished finish. It's the product for classic looks like the side part, the pompadour, or the slicked-back style. Works best on straight or wavy hair where the shine reads as clean and intentional rather than greasy.

There are oil-based pomades and water-based pomades. Oil-based gives more hold and shine but is harder to wash out. Water-based washes out easily and is usually the better choice for most guys. If you're going for a defined, classic look and you don't mind a shiny finish, pomade is your product.

Clay: Matte Finish, Most Versatile

If you only buy one product, make it a clay. It gives you texture and hold without shine. The finish is natural and matte, which is what most guys are going for when they want their hair to look styled without looking like they tried too hard. It also reworks throughout the day, meaning you can run your fingers through it and reshape without it getting stiff or flaky.

Clay works on almost every hair type and style. Short to medium length hair especially. If you don't know what to buy and you want something that works consistently, start with a clay.

Grooming Clay

Wax: Flexible Hold, Natural Finish

Wax sits between pomade and clay. It has some shine but not as much as pomade, and it holds better than most creams but not as firm as a strong clay. Good for medium-length hair where you want some definition and movement but not a rigid hold.

Paste: Texture and Separation

Paste is for guys who want a more undone, textured look. It separates strands and adds definition without making the hair look heavy or overly styled. Great for short hair or styles where you want visible texture and movement.

Texture Paste

"If you only buy one product, make it a clay. It works on almost every hair type and style — matte finish, holds all day, reworks when you need it."

Quick Guide: Which Product for Which Hair Type

  • Fine hair: Lightweight clay or paste. Avoid heavy waxes that weigh it down.
  • Thick hair: Strong-hold clay or wax. You need more product to tame it.
  • Curly hair: Cream or light paste applied to damp hair. Pomade can make it look greasy.
  • Short hair (faded): A little clay or paste. You don't need much.
  • Classic styles (side part, pompadour): Pomade.
  • Natural / textured look: Clay or paste applied to slightly damp hair.

How to Actually Apply It

Less is more with almost every product. Start with a small amount — about a dime to a quarter size depending on hair length — rub it between your palms to warm it up, then work it through your hair evenly before styling. You can always add more; you can't take it back once it's in.

Apply to dry hair for more hold and definition. Apply to slightly damp hair for a more natural, softer finish. Experiment with both and see which result you prefer for your style.
